Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 "Ed White" Review

The Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch is one of the most recognised and iconic watches. There are several versions, with the original hexalite plexiglass (as saphire glass was not safe for the moon mission) and many others issues for the various missions anniversaries.

In 2020 Omega released the Omega Speedmaster Moonwatch 321 that uses a modern (for instance with the use of sedna gold) version of the Caliber 321. It is true to the original and assembled not with the typical industrial way of big watch manufacturers but by a single watchmarker in a separate department.

The watch has a number of subtle but noticeable difference to the standard Speedmaster moonwatch. Size is at 39.7mm vs 42mm of the regular production moonwatch. There are no crown guards (that makes it much easier to wind and operate).

The dial features the applied historic omega logo.

The bracelet is also different and very comfortable. Is very similar to the Apollo 11 50th Anniversary watch with thin links. The clasp uses the historic omega logo.

I found the size to be just perfect. Sporty but elegant, very versatile and understated as only few will spot the difference with the more common Omega Speedmaster moonwatch.

As you would expect from a moonwatch the lume is pretty strong and well readable in the dark.

The movement is obviously the star of this watch: the sapphire crystal on the back reveals the 321 in its splendor with sedna gold, omega proprietary rose gold alloy. This is the same caliber worn on the moon with a modern and elegant finish.

Another modern element of the watch is the bezel in ceramic.

There has been much debate about the price since the 321 has a much higher price than the regular moonwatch. This is due to the movement and entirely different way to product it. Only 1000-2000 movements per year will be made and this watch is already difficult to get. It is not limited so all you need is a good relationship with an Omega boutique or authorised distributor and patience.

I found the watch to be the best speedmaster moonwatch ever made. The movement is the one truly worn on the moon but using the most modern finish. The sizing, absence of crown guards and bracelet make it also extremely comfortable.

Last but not least for the CEO that wants a watch that will not unwanted attention this is perfectly understated yet elegant choice.
